AND SO YOUR POETRY MUST

Be wary you say
of its claims
lest you waive art
to us millions unworthy
of taste and manner
lest you be christened
peddler of images
alien in form
pagan in content
lest your license
be forfeited
your ear for resonance
your feel for the sublime.

And so while you summon
the litany of worlds
your own words fashion
you annul my existence
and those of millions
whose narratives you say
betray poetic tone
make burlesque of beauty
and thus like scarecrows
set even the most heretic
muses scurrying back
to their sanctum of rules.

And so in recollecting
your epiphanies
you elude the void
which is my hunger
the famine of millions
the empty bowl of history.

And so with your eulogies
to passion
to rage against time
to pledge withlife’s gift
you lull the birth
of noise
of revenge
of bloodshow
that shall feed millions
complete history
and perhaps spare poetry.

Bilin mo, mag-ingat
sa kung ano dapat ang tulain
dahil baka maipaubaya ito
sa laksa-laksang panis
ang laway at gawi ;
na baka maparatangan kang
naglalako ng talinghaga ng damit
pero kita naman ang iyong pusod kapag isinuot ito
o baka bata na hindi marunong mag-antanda
at bawiin sa iyo ang
ipinagkatiwalang mapakinggan ang dapat pakinggan,
ang salatin ang kutob.

Ngunit habang sumisipol ka sa hangin,
nagbubuhol ng mga salita,
at nililikom ang mga alalahanin ng daigdig,
binubura mo naman ang aking pag-iral
at ang salaysay ng sanlaksa
na inaakala mong magkakanulo
sa talab ng talinghaga —
silang suwail sa kariktan;
na tulad ng panakot-uwak ,
itinataboy sila,
silang pinaka-alibughang paraluman
na nagkukumahog pabalik
sa kanilang kublihang iniutos ng hari
kung saan doon daw sila dapat.

Kung kaya habang ninanamnam
mo ang mga papuri ,
ayaw mong malanghap
ang ligaw na hangin sa kumukulo kong tiyan
ayaw mong marinig ang malawakang kalam;
ang sikmura na nais mabusog dahil dapat mabusog.

Dahil nahuhumaling
ka sa nakamihasnang buhay
at ayaw mong makita ang sarili
na pinupulot sa kangkungan ng kasaysayan,
sinasakal mo
ang pangit na balita
ang pinakamakatarungang katarungan
at nagpipikit-mata ka sa madugong opera
na magluluwal
sa matris ng kasaysayan ng mga walang pangalan
at marahil, hahalili sa panulaan.
