BATANG KABUTE

Sityo Kabute is a community of 150 urban poor families in Brgy. Real, Calamba City now facing an impending demolition.

Since the 1970s, families started sprouting like mushrooms in the 3 hectare idle land, hence the name. It was only in January 2008 when the land came into dispute after Metrobank corp. set down their claim. In September 11, 2008, the local court issued a demolition order.

 

Of the 150 families, about 300 children will be displaced if the demolition pushes through.

 

“Batang Kabute” is an advocacy campaign initiated by ST EXPOSURE and Bayan Muna-Southern Tagalog to gather support for the families of Sityo Kabute in their struggle for their right to land and decent homes.

 

As a way to support the campaign, ST Exposure is selling postcards that would bear the drawings made by the Kabute children themselves. Other kinds of support are also encouraged such as integration in the community, massive information dissemination, and active participation in the future activities of the campaign.

 

A benefit gig produced by ST Exposure, Artists’ ARREST, and Bayan Muna would also be held on Oct. 11 at Ten 02 Bar, Ybardolaza, corner Timog Ave, Quezon City, from 6-9pm.
